Case Study of Integrative Marital Counseling for Couples Exposed to High Divorce Risk Caused by Mutual Emotional Abuse

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study explored the use and results of marital counseling for couples exposed to higher divorce risk caused by mutual emotional abuse. For the improvement of the positive interaction, Gottman Couple Therapy was applied.
Method: In this study, ten 180-minute sessions were performed on couples. For qualitative evaluation, the researcher conducted a process-and-change analysis of the transcripts and post-session interviews with the participants. Also, for quantitative evaluation, the researcher performed marriage crisis diagnostic tests and marriage satisfaction tests to identify the before-and-after differences of counseling.
Results: Couples had improved their trust, emotional coordination, communication, conflict management, and meaning sharing. Also, the level of marriage crisis was lower, and the level of marital satisfaction was higher.
Conclusions: Integrative marital counseling was proved to be an effective model for improvement of the marital relationship of couples exposed to high divorce risk caused by mutual emotional abuse.
